New York (UN) - The UN General Assembly adopted, on Wednesday, without a vote, a draft resolution on the Sahara which was previously adopted by the UN fourth committee, reiterating the UN's support for the process of searching for a negotiated political solution to the Moroccan Sahara issue.

The UNGA "supports the process of negotiations initiated by resolution 1754 (2007) and further sustained by UNSC resolutions 1783 (2007),1813 (2008), 1871 (2009), 1920 (2010), 1979 (2011), 2044 (2012) and 2099 (2013) with a view to achieving a just, lasting and mutually acceptable political solution," and lauds efforts made in this regard, said the document.

The text calls upon the region's states to fully cooperate with efforts made under the UN aegis and with each other to search for a mutually-acceptable political solution to the regional dispute over the Sahara.

The resolution also urges parties to show political will and work in an atmosphere propitious for dialogue, in order to enter into a more intensive phase of negotiations, in good faith and without preconditions, while taking account of efforts exerted and developments made since 2006, ensuring the implementation of above-mentioned UNSC resolutions.

Thus, the General Assembly supports the approach by the security council, since the adoption of resolution 1754 (2007), with reference to the submission by Morocco of its autonomy initiative for the Sahara, which was hailed by the executive body and the international community as "serious and credible".
