Tetouan - HM King Mohammed VI launched, Tuesday in the northern city of Tetouan, the development and recalibration works of Oued Martil, a high environmental, social, urban and economic impact project, part of the integrated economic and urban development program of the city (2014-2018).
The USD 91-million project reflects the particular interest granted by the Sovereign to environmental protection and sustainable development, as well as His constant commitment to promote the economic attractiveness of Tetouan, improve the living conditions of its population and open new urbanization zones.
It stems from a comprehensive and integrated vision aiming at protecting the towns of Tetouan and Martil against the risk of flooding, creating an urban area on the banks of Oued Martil that could contain the future expansion of the city of Tetouan and host residential, cultural, recreational, sports, business and commercial spaces.
The development and recalibration project of the bed of Oued Martil will stabilize the banks of the Oued and thus service nearly 1,600 hectares, which would relieve the current urban pressure on the city, more particularly in the old medina and the "Ensanche" neighborhood, and enable these two historic sites to get anew their heritage and tourist vocation.
The serviced land will accommodate areas dedicated to economic and commercial development (shopping centers), large-scale facilities (bus station, indoor sports complex), cultural activities (Madinat Al Maarifa, Islamic cultural center, cultural complex, museum), tourism activities (corniche, marina, golf, hotels, tourist residences, landscaped parks, camping), and housing prjects (standard and social housing).
During the development of this area, special attention will be given to the integration of existing neighborhoods and respect for social diversity.
This pilot project will reinforce the five-year program of economic and urban development of Tetouan which is meant to improve the living conditions of local population, promote the assets of this region and consolidate the position of the city at the national level.
