Kinshasa - Moroccan peacekeepers are actively contributing in operations aiming at protecting civilians in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), said Félix-Prosper Bass, military spokesperson for the United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the DRC (MONUSCO).

The blue helmets of the Moroccan contingent taking part in the MONUSCO play a key role in establishing order and state authority in the restive regions east of RDC, where violence has been recurrent, Bass said in an interview with MAP.

Moroccan soldiers have been participating in operations against armed groups east of the country, he said, adding that the Moroccan contingent has been operating both unilaterally and in coordination with the armed forces of the DRC.

The MONUSOC official also praised the professionalism evinced by Moroccan soldiers and their devotion to their peacekeeping and stabilisation mission, said Bass who is an alumnus of the Royal Military Academy of Meknes.

He also highlighted the importance of "the efforts undertaken by Moroccan Blue Hemets to bring assistance to civilians through organising medical campaigns, restoring and renovating infrastructure and building schools."

The Moroccan peacekeepers are tasked with protecting civilians in the RDC city of Kisangani as well as supporting the DRC restore order and authority over the eastern regions.
