Casablanca - The firm determination of HM King Mohammed VI to promote training in calligraphy, a form of art that is deep-rooted in Morocco’s rich history, was given new concrete shape when the Sovereign handed, on Friday at Multimedia Library of the Hassan II Grand Mosque in Casablanca, diplomas to calligraphy graduates of the Casablanca Traditional Arts Academy.

The ceremony also reflects HM the King’s interest in the preservation and promotion of the cultural and artistic aspects of the Moroccan authentic, rich diverse identity, and the Sovereign insightful vision for restoring handicrafts and related professions, particularly endangered ones.

On this occasion HM the King handed certificates to nine graduates.

During their studies at the Casablanca Traditional Arts Academy, the graduates attended theoretical and practical courses, seminars, lectures, workshops and conducted field work and internships to acquire the needed scientific, technical and professional skills to master the art of calligraphy, develop artistic capabilities and carry out research and innovation works.

The Casablanca Academy of Traditional Arts that the Sovereign had dedicated on October 31, 2012, is a training and research institution in the field of traditional arts (carved wood, tiles, plaster, calligraphy, tannery, weaving and jewellery). It gives young people access to areas of creation and excellence, as well as new technologies and modern management methods.

One of the four components of the Hassan II Grand Mosque Foundation, the Academy, a unique institution nationwide and a rare one internationally, is a pilot project in traditional arts training whether in terms know-how or scientific, technological and historical knowledge.

On the same occasion, the students: Abdellatif El Bouanani and Ibrahim El Moussaoui presented HM the King with two paintings of different Moroccan calligraphic styles.

Similarly, Mohamed Amzil, a professor at the Academy and the president of the Moroccan Association of Calligraphy presented the Sovereign with one of his paintings.

Afterwards, HM the King toured a calligraphy exhibition co-organized by the Hassan II Grand Mosque Foundation and the Moroccan Association of Calligraphy under the theme "Light of the Letter".

The exhibition showcases 80 calligraphic works by 46 calligraphers, including the winners of the Mohammed VI Award of Moroccan Calligraphy and students of the Casablanca Traditional Arts Academy.
