Europe team wins IAAF Continental Cup, Marrakech 2014

Marrakech - The European team took the lead Sunday at the 2nd IAAF Continental cup, a team contest worth a total of US$ 2,900,000 in prize money being paid by the IAAF.

 

The European team (85 athletes from 24 federations) grabbed 447.5 points in the 40 contests, while American and African athletes won respectively 390 and 339. The Asia-Pacific team ranked 4 with 257.5 points.

 

The European team had also grabbed the 1st Continental cup before the IAAF rescinded the title for doping and gave the victory to the American team.

 

Last leading athletics fixture of the year, the continent cup is held every four year which replaced the Athletics world cup of nations (1996-2006). The Marrakech edition brought together 320 athletes.

 

The cup was awarded to the European team by IAAF chairman, Lamine Diack, in the presence of Moroccan youth and sports minister, Mohamed Ouzzine and head of the local organizing committee and chairman of the Moroccan royal athletics federation, Abdeslam Ahizoune.
