Morocco admitted as an observer member of the Central American Integration System (SICA)

Morocco was admitted Wednesday, April 23, 2014, as an observer member of the Central American Integration System (SICA), a regional grouping which includes Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Panama, Belize and the Dominican Republic.

 

To this effect, Morocco becomes the first African and Arab country to join the regional grouping alongside Mexico, Chile, Brazil, Argentina, Peru, United States, Ecuador, the Uruguay, Colombia, Taiwan, Spain, Germany, Japan, Australia, south Korea, France, the Vatican, the United Kingdom and the European Union.

 

Cooperative relationships between Morocco and the SICA date back to 1999 when the two sides signed a cooperative agreement aimed at strengthening South-South axis.

 

In addition, Morocco is an observer member within several organizations and regional and continental bodies in Latin America and the Caribbean, including the Organization of American States (OAS), the Ibero-American Summit, the Association of Caribbean States (AEC) and the Andean Parliament.

 

The Kingdom was admitted in February, as an observer member of the Pacific Alliance, a regional consortium of Colombia, Peru, Chile and Mexico.

It should be noted that the SICA aims to achieve economic complementarily between the countries in the grouping so that Central America becomes a region where peace, freedom, democracy and development prevails.
